The difference between rolling and grinding screw

Ballscrews

For trapezoidal lead screws, rolling is more popular than cutting. Rolling is to squeeze a round bar in a set of modules to roll out the thread. It allows the surface of the lead screw to be harder and have better surface quality. Rolling is also a commonly used manufacturing process for ball screws because it is more economical and precision is enough to meet most industrial applications. The lead precision is better than 0.003 inches/foot, and the usable length is longer than the ground screw.

If higher precision is required, should use grinding screw. The precision of the grinding process can reach 0.0003 inch/ft or even higher. However, grinding process is more expensive and the maximum length of the screw is shorter.
